The purpose of this organization is to foster the growth and fuller expression of Jewish life in our community by: Nurturing Jewish culture, heritage and family life. Providing intellectual stimulation and ongoing Jewish education. Integrating Jewish law and ritual into modern life. Seeking spiritual and religious experiences. Developing a sense of community by working together while acknowledging and encouraging our diversity. Welcoming and inviting non-Jewish partners. Meeting social, recreational and human needs of people in all life stages. Developing commitment to extended Jewish community and Israel. Developing Jewish social conscience as a stimulus to social and political action. Developing positive relations with the general community. Providing and maintaining facilities and programs to accomplish these aims.

As far back as 1915, a small group of Berkeley Jews had been gathering for Friday night and Holiday services in rented space above downtown stores. It took nearly a decade for them to find a permanent home, but on July 20, 1924, the cornerstone of the Berkeley Hebrew Center was laid at Bancroft and Jefferson Streets in Berkeley. Most of the founders of the East Bay’s fledgling traditional congregation were immigrants to this country, and nostalgic for the life they had left behind in Europe. They were helped in their attempts to establish a Berkeley base by two of the area’s leading Reform rabbis, Martin Meyer and Louis I. Newman of San Francisco’s Temple Emanuel. Rabbi Meyer served as a trustee as early as 1915; Newman, his favorite disciple, took over upon his death in 1923.

One thing our church is passionate about is doing good for others, without any type of faith expectation in return. With our various community service programs and events we like everyone to get involved.

Religion-Related, Spiritual Development

The Church of the Essence has been helping people in our community since 1979. We are living in a time when we need more leaders and healers skilled in ancient arts of healing, plant spirit medicine, vibrational and energy medicine, plant medicine who can bring balance to the body, mind, and spirit . There are so many who are in need of deep healing and not many trained in these ancient art forms of medicine. We cannot hope to reach all but we try to reach as many as possible.

They are committed to promoting Jewish literacy, culture, and values to present and future generations. This includes observation and celebration of Jewish holidays, rituals, and life cycle events in a manner that brings together Jewish and humanist ideas.
