After the publication of What Is The What, a novelized account of the life of Valentino Achak Deng, Valentino and author Dave Eggers established the VAD Foundation to help rebuild South Sudanese communities by building schools and establishing community development programs. The VAD Foundation operates two schools, Marial Bai Secondary School and Alok Girls' Academy, which have become flagship models for holistic education in the region by incorporating sustainable agriculture, vocational training, and gender equality into every aspect of the curriculum.
