Pledge to make a difference, together.
New Avenues for Youth is a Portland-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention and intervention of youth homelessness. Our services for young people (ages 9-25) focus on the individual—their experiences, identities, needs, and goals—and helping them make positive change in their lives.
Kris, now 21 years old, grew up with a lot of bullying when they came out as gay and non-binary in their early school years. After a serious struggle with mental health challenges that resulted in them dropping out of college, losing their housing, and losing connection with family, Kris came to New Avenues Drop-In Center for help. Kris began working with one of our case managers to begin building independent living skills and accessing mental health counseling at New Avenues. Kris applied for and received a housing grant that allowed them to move into their own apartment! They also began career coaching with our PAVE program. This led to being hired in a paid internship with a local law firm. Kris now has full-time employment at that law firm, is no longer using the housing grant, and can afford all of their own expenses! Way to go Kris!!!
