Pledge to make a difference, together.
CAPA exists to break the destructive cycle of child abuse and neglect by equipping parents, children and their caregivers with necessary skills, knowledge, and values.
Ms. Cidne works at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. She decided to foster after witnessing many children admitted to the hospital for abuse or neglect. She received her first placement call shortly after receiving her license. When Thomas arrived, he was timid and kind, but he often threw tantrums when things did not go his way. Ms. Cidne and Thomas started family counseling to help navigate his meltdowns and figure out how to express his frustration and anger better. Gradually, Thomas began to heal and bond with Ms. Cidne. Thomas now considers her his “Mema.” Ms. Cidne has said that this placement was very challenging but, in the end, very rewarding. After several months with Ms. Cidne, Thomas began transitional visits back to his family. Now successfully reunified with his biological parents, Mema’s baby still calls and comes to see her. What a success!
David came to Open Arms due to educational and physical neglect. He was 17 and had been living in a car with his mother. He had not been attending school. Because of his age, David decided to enroll in a community adult education program to pursue his GED. Within two months, this super-smart young man finished the program and got a job at a local sub shop. His boss described him as a huge asset and a very dependable employee. David’s next life hurdle was obtaining his driver’s license and a vehicle. He enrolled in the area Excellerate program, a 16-week life skills program that rewards graduates with a car. David sailed through the class, found auto insurance, and received his car. After turning 18, David decided to leave foster care to be closer to his family. His current plans are to attend real estate school and become an agent. David is the picture of resilience, persevering through difficult circumstances.
CAPA believes that all children should be safe from intentional and unintentional harm.
