CARECEN was founded in 1981 to protect the rights of refugees arriving from conflict in Central America and to help ease their transition. CARECEN’s mission is to foster the comprehensive development of the Latino population/ community in the Washington metropolitan region by providing direct service, while promoting grassroots empowerment, civic engagement and human rights advocacy.Inspired by Central American justice struggles, CARECEN envisions a Washington metropolitan region where all communities thrive in solidarity and dignity, enjoy a prosperous life, and work towards achieving social justice and political empowerment.

Mission: To promote and enrich the social, economic and personal advancement of Armenian women worldwide through educational and other community activities that unite Armenian women, promote gender equity, and emphasize our Armenian cultural heritage. Goals: To establish contacts with women’s organizations, both Armenian and non-Armenian, in the United States, in Armenia, and around the world. To provide a forum for dialogue and discussion on issues of interest to Armenian women in the fields of education, social welfare, culture, and business. To gather information about the changing role of women in the world, to monitor the activities of Armenian women, and to establish an Armenian women’s archive. At its core, MayaWorks is about creating work for women so that they can financially support their families and become fully contributing members of their communities. MayaWorks helps women transform their skills into a means of financial support for their families by creating a market for the traditional arts of Maya artisans. Textile products are distributed within wholesale and retail markets and are also sold by U.S. women in their local communities. Giving Guatemalan women an opportunity to earn an income from their skills gives them self-confidence and hope for themselves, their families and their communities. For U.S. women, reaching across borders to give a hand up to help women in developing countries allows them to participate in economic justice on a global level.

In 2000, Episcopal priest Bill Rankin and renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Charlie Wilson launched GAIA to increase health equity globally and to bring life-saving treatment to one of the countries most impacted by the AIDS epidemic. Today, with GAIA’s support, Malawi is one of the first African countries to meet UNAIDS 2020 90-90-90 treatment targets, even in the most remote districts with the highest HIV prevalence, where we work. Throughout our history, GAIA has adapted our services to provide compassionate, patient-centered healthcare. We meet the immediate needs of the population by providing community-based health services and health education while also strengthening Malawi's healthcare workforce for the long-term by accelerating health workforce development and promoting equitable deployment of frontline providers. In 2007, GAIA Malawi was formally established as an independent, but closely aligned, entity to the U.S. organization. With its own self-selected Board of Directors and a 100% Malawian staff, GAIA Malawi works closely with GAIA U.S. to design and execute cost-effective program responses to the evolving health needs of Malawi’s rural population. All program interventions are developed with key input from the communities served and executed in partnership with the Government of Malawi, Ministry of Health and Population, and local and international partners. GAIA believes that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, no matter where they live or who they are.
