Bissell Centre takes a holistic approach to addressing the root issues surrounding poverty and homelessness. Our programs and services are hinged on the principle that building respectful, trusting relationships helps deal with the core issues of a person in poverty. Bissell engages with our community members to learn who they are, what their unique barriers are and provide the resources necessary to emerge out of poverty and reconnect with their hope. Programs work with one another to address the many daily and long-term issues such as hunger, education, employment, safety, housing and mental health. The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa (BGCO) has served the Ottawa community since 1923, reaching out to 4,500 children and youth each year through after-school, weekend and summer programs that build self-esteem and help to develop stronger social skills. We utilize an integrated model of age-appropriate social, recreational and academic activities that include proven strategies for building positive relationships, mentoring, conflict resolution, skill development and employment training. These programs are developed in collaboration with families, local schools and other community partners to create comprehensive healthy living opportunities for children and youth.

Yellow Brick House helps abused women and children by offering emergency shelter, transitional housing, counselling and supportive services; empowering them to lead violent-free lives. Aside from direct services to abused women and children we also provide public educational services within the school systems. Abuse prevention workshops raise awareness among students about the issues of violence against women while promoting healthy relationships. We directly speak to over 9,000 individuals every year.
