Since 1981, the John Wayne name has been committed by the Wayne family to groundbreaking cancer research and education in memory of their father who died of cancer. The John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's Health Center is a cancer research institute dedicated to the understanding and curing of cancer in order to eliminate patient suffering worldwide. Our mission is accomplished through innovative clinical and laboratory research and the education of the next generation of surgical oncologists and scientists. In fulfilling its mission, the John Wayne Cancer Institute: * Conducts innovative research focusing on biological mechanisms to provide new understandings of the cause, diagnosis, control, and cure of cancer. * Provides training for new generations of surgical scientists who study and treat cancer. * Offers unique experimental treatment services to rapidly develop and test new forms of diagnosis and therapy in order to improve the quality of life and expected survival of those afflicted with cancer. The Institute has received worldwide acclaim for advances in melanoma (skin cancer), breast and colon cancer as well as immune therapy of cancer. Other areas of research include prostate and liver cancer. Step Up delivers compassionate support to people experiencing serious mental health issues, and persons who are experiencing chronic homelessness, to help them recover, stabilize, and integrate into the community. Through dynamic partnerships, we provide positive social and learning environments, vocational training, permanent supportive housing opportunities, and recovery services to empower individuals to cultivate lives of hope and dignity. The primary goal of treatment is to restore healthy parent-child relationships whenever feasible.Youth who have religious inclinations will be encouraged to be active in the faith of their choice. Youth will be taught about nutrition, exercise and hygiene.We will actively advocate for children and not allow society to ignore or diminish the legitimate needs of children and youth.

Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers was founded in 1979 to raise and train capuchin monkeys to provide daily in-home assistance to people living with spinal cord injuries or other mobility impairments. We are the only organization in the world that has trained capuchin monkeys to be service animals. Helping Hands learned that these little animals delivered more than just a willing set of nimble hands to their recipients. The monkeys provided companionship, joy, and the renewed sense of purpose that comes from taking responsibility for the health and well-being of another creature. Our mission is to provide: outstanding, ongoing support for our current recipients and their monkey helpers; a safe, healthy, fulfilling environment for post-service monkeys for the rest of their lives
