BC Guide Dog Services began the professional training of guide dogs for blind & visually impaired British Columbians in 1996. In 2001, B.C. Guide Dog Services became full members of the International Guide Dog Federation, an international accrediting body. In 2002, B.C. Guide Dog Services registered the title Alberta Guide Dog Services for the purposes of providing guide dogs to blind & visually impaired Albertans. The goal of BC & Alberta Guide Dog Services is, by the year 2020, to have a working guide dog population of 250 guide dog teams. The working life of a guide dog team is about eight years, therefore, BC & Alberta Guide Dog Services will need to have graduated a cumulative total of 395 guide dog teams by 2020 to achieve this goal.
