One of the worst hurricane damaged areas I have seen. And that's saying something, considering this is my 30th hurricane. The devastation is indescribable, the loss of property, life and lively hood is tragic beyond words. It will take years to recover from this. Some won't recover at all. But, the humanity and neighbor helping neighbor spirit I witnessed was a sight to behold. Within days, there were distribution centers in parking lots, on neighborhood corners, in churches and community centers. If you didn't have the means to go get it, neighbors made sure to pick it up for you. There are still communities that can only be accessed by helicopter. MMI team members set up a pop up medical clinic in a grocery store parking lot that had one of these large distribution centers. Other team members went door to door daily, looking for people who wouldn't or couldn't leave their home. Treating minor wounds, taking blood pressures and checking blood sugars, giving medications, calling an ambulance when necessary and giving and receiving lots of hugs. I am so grateful to be a witness to this amazing show of humanity and to be able to hear the stories of optimism and hope that everyone I saw still has. THAT is "North Carolina Strong."
